Exjaust Flange Gasket

FYI: I am building an exhaust riser out of black pipe. I have been reading a lot of banter about whether the M-35 exhaust flange gasket goes on wet or dry. There doesn't seem to be any consensus about how it should be done, so I called the Catalina Direct tech guys and asked them about it. For what it's worth, they tell me that they put them on dry at the factory. That's as close as I could get to a definitive answer re: the wet/dry debate.

All the best--Joel S.

Joel-
I (re)constructed a black pipe exhaust system on my Catalina 30. I think the engine was a M-25. I mounted the new exhaust flange gasket dry- never had a problem. The original Catalina OEM exhaust was black pipe (between the manifold and muffler). It lasted about 800 hours. The only piece I could salvage was the bronze water injection collar - just before the muffler. It was an awful job on the 30' because there was no room in the engine compartment and the flange bolts were so rusted, I had to remove the entire manifold and bring it to Hansen Marine to separate the flange from the manifold. The 36 has all the room in the world to work on the engine.

Good luck

I did mine a few months back and fitted it dry.

Joel, we did ours dry. I have always recommended that skippers buy TWO of the gaskets, 'cuz that lower stud hole is VERY close to the edge of the gasket, and if it gets wet, it'll crumble, and guess what??? (M25 engine, they're all pretty much the same).

Tony, did you go the black pipe route?

Thanks for your reply, William. How did the make it, and out of what materials? Were they able to build you an exhaust remotely, that is, without access to you boat? That is one heck of a cheap price!

They said to sent in the size of the old one,but I took the old one up to them and they could see it cracked around the fittings so the new one they built was beefed up around that area they put the drain plug in the new one and since it was the same size it fit in perfect. This was in 2007 but I believe I have the bill and adress on the boat, next time Iam on the boat ,only 8 miles away will check

Hey William, if I am not mistaken we are talking about two different things. I am talking about the riser pipe that attaches to the manifold via the exhaust flange, and you are talking about about the fiberglass aqualift on the other side of the riser that mixes the exhaust gasses with sea water, no?

Joel,

I didn't need to replace the pipe work, I just had the manifold cleaned and the fill neck re-brazed. Had it done at a radiator shop in downtown San Diego.
I'll be in CVM this weekend, swing by if you have any questions. Also, I'd like to show you my new 30" stanchions.

Hey Tony, unfortunately I won't be down there this weekend, but I will be looking for you next time I'm down to see your handywork!
