thru bolt size for mast head fitting

If this is somewhere on the web site I apologize in advance but I need to know if any one knows the dimensions of the thru bolt that holds the mast head in place. I was going to measure it this evening prior to heading home but forgot. I had unstepped my mast and thought I had loosely fit the thru bolt in place but i can't locate it anywhere. problem is that my boat and mast are about 1 1/2 hours away and i plan to step the mast next weekend but i kinda need the thru both that holds the mast head in place. it looks like it is around 1/2 inch but that was just eye balling it. I'll check with the the folks at catalina direct but anyone knows it would save a lot of time, this is for a Mark I (hull 226) and i don't know if the measurements are the same for a Mark II.

Bolts are relatively cheap and this is the kind of thing that could, possibly vary (especially on an older boat where who knows what a PO might have done). If I were you I would buy a range of sizes from a place with a decent return policy, bring them all to the boat, and return the ones you don't use.

This is not a bad strategy generally, IMHO.

David,
thanks for the reply but the through bolt on the masthead is pretty standard and i really doubt anyone would decide to change the size of the through bolt hole size. I had hoped someone that had their mast down might be able to check the size but i guess no joy.. guess i don't ask the right questions

If your (or anyone else's) bolt was ever replaced and the hole enlarged by a PO due to corrosion (viz. due to stainless bolt in aluminum mast), then you're likely to have a larger masthead bolt than standard.

There's a bunch of stuff on my boat (like my vang mount) where this has been done, so my bolts don't match your bolts (even if we are Mk I to Mk II).

At the masthead, I've seen this done before, though admittedly not on one of our boats.

If your boat was a 2007 Mk II I'd say unlikely, but for an older boat, especially with a few POs -- who knows. IMHO I wouldn't trust a bolt measurement off of someone else's boat, if its critical.

The bolt size is 1/2 inch with AT LEAST 5 3/8 of shaft (non threaded metal), no part of the thread should be exposed to the mast. Need to put in a plug for McMaster-Carr here they had any combo you needed had Monel washers and were fast. I wound up with a 7 inch bolt, I now hav lots of largess bolt if anyone is on the market
