Cutless Bearing Set Screws?

Hi, all. I have scoured the forum and found little on this subject. I believe that my 1999 model does NOT have any set screws holding the cutless bearing into the strut. Does anyone with a similar aged boat have any contrary info?

Hauling Thursday for a lot of work in the high heat and humidity. This is my payback for being able to sail in shirt-sleeves in the winter.

Well, guys, that is interesting news. I will certainly look for them before extracting the bearing.

Thanks!

Duane

I am just in the process of installing a new SS prop shaft and cutlass bearing, on our 1999, in fact I am waiting for the UPS delivery this morning.

My old cutlass bearing, sitting in front of me, does not have set screws. My boat does have Spurs, which I am replacing the wear parts on. The holding block for the Spurs mounts on the strut. Whoever mounted them for the previous owner drilled and tapped threads into the strut. They did drill through the strut wall into the bronze cutlass bearing, but I don’t think the mounting screws are long enough to act as set screws. They could certainly be confused for set screws.

“high heat and humidity” – We have been having the same kind of weather here in Vermont, thunder storms every afternoon for the last week and a half, record high rain fall. And we don’t get to sail in shirt sleeves in the winter if we stay here.

'scuse my ignorance, but what are Spurs? I thought cowboys used them, not sailboats??

Bud if you lived in Maine you would know what they were!

The previous owner kept the boat in the Chesapeake, lots of crab pots to dodge, like lobster traps in Maine. Since we are heading south this fall through the Chesapeake I thought they should be in good working order. Otherwise they haven’t been much use here on Lake Champlain, generally something us fresh water sailors don’t have to much need for.

Just a quick report that my 1999 C36 DOES have two set screws in the side of the strut. I used one of the Association's tools to remove and replace the cutless bearing and even working by myself, it went pretty well - once I got the old prop off.
