Could anyone identify this device? It was mounted in the aft "closet" and the two orange wires were connected to a large 10 or 20 watt resistor. The PO had installed solar panel system and the controller is in the stern lazarette this might be part of that. This device is encapsulated and has no marking on it.
Appreciate any help.

From initial inspection, it looks like it could be a voltage regulator.
The pair of wires on the left could connect to the solar panel.
The other ones could connect to the house load and battery.
Where do the wires run to at the moment?

Is there no label on it?

There is no identifier not even a number anywhere. I think the key is the large power resistor that it needs.

Why don't you apply +12 volts to the red and black and see what happens? That's what I would do, but then my wife tells me I've never outgrown the boy that's part of me.

I've done some more research into solar charge controllers and I think Rockman was right it is a charge controller. Some of the controllers show a Load, which would be resistor, the two red and black wires are the panel inputs and common ground and the red / black on the other side would be the battery connection. Yes I could put 12V on it but that would'nt show anything... I have got to trace out what it was hooked up to. I disconnected it hoping it had a label on the bottom. Thanks for the help.

There is nothing more rewarding than tracing unknown wiring that the PO installed. I've done lots of it. You've got to figure out where the wires go to/from.
What fun!:D
