1984 MKl Nav Table Modification

Hi all,

Hope you are all getting ready for the spring....its right around the corner!

I have been working on winter projects (a ton of them) and one I am interested in doing is modifying the nav station. Its pretty big, bigger than it needs to be I think. I wanted to get some advice on what other folks have done. I was thinking on shorting the length of the table to just enough to cover the cabinet housing the four drawers. This should give me plenty storage for charts if I roll them and free up some space between the chair and the leading edge of the table. Has anyone done anything like this? Now is the time as I have everything apart while rewiring the panel...the PO made a complet mess of things and thats been on my list for a while so to get to the area behind the panel I removed the nav table and the wall teak panel that the electric panel door is mounted to.

Sure would love to hear some thoughts/advice on this navigation station/table modification.

Larry - I am also going to rework my electrical this spring and have been looking for ideas around the Nav table. Would love to see what you end up doing for the panel and wiring. I found one upgrade I was interested in - photo attached - but I had not considered changing the table. I like the space it gives me for charts, storing my laptop and charting tools. But, it would be nice to open up access to the aft cabin a little. I hate the Nav table top and saw one that was redone in our upgrades area. I'll search for it and post the link if I find it.
Attached a pic of my winter project in case this turns into a "What have you been doing to beat Cabin Fever" thread.
Good Luck!

Thanks Harold, I will be sure to post my pics of the project. I am headed back down to the boat this weekend weather permitting:) Not sure what I will do with the table yet but its time for a change in this area of the boat I think so I will keep on looking for a solution.

I'm also planning on re-doing the nav station, but I haven't decided exactly how, so I'll be watching to see what you come up with. Here are a few pics that I've stolen off the internet (boat ads, etc) over the years to get some ideas.

I use my nav station a lot to write reports on my laptop for work. I have a 2' X 3' piece of foam board that just sits between the nav desk and galley counter and which serves as extra workspace to spread out papers, etc. It's pretty flimsy, so I've been trying to think of a way to extend the nav desktop all the way to the galley counter either through a flip-up piece or a slide out (ala kitchen breadboard) that would slide out from the nav desk compartment and connect to the galley counter. Aside from workspace, this would also be great when serving a crowd allowing extra galley counterspace. You can see why I haven't exactly figured it all out yet, but I like the idea.:o

Larry,
I'm going to play the devil's advocate here a bit, I would think one of the features of the chart table is, you have one! Many boats share this space with something else. Also the space under the desk top works perfectly for storing the chart kits and other items the way it is. I particularly find it difficult to work with charts when they have been rolled up. I usually have them folded and kept under a berth to maintain a flatness. I would give some thought to "if I wished to sell" would my change be a feature someone would want? Now having said that perhaps you might want to upgrade the laminate to something less dated. Actually there is even a paint available to cover laminates these days. Mike had supplied a picture of the conversion of the seat converted to a bench and I have always thought that looked like a great idea (I saved that pic as well). On the other hand I have found that the original seat and work station just right for reading in the evening. Every other location I tend to doze off.
I did make one change in that area. When rewiring a new battery bank (4 6v's) I noticed there is a fair amount of space behind the four drawers. I cut out for a door and placed a shelf and use this as my wine cellar.

Gary, I second that. The wife would be thrilled at that idea. I am still playing out the ideas of maybe shortening the table length a bit or as you suggest resurfacing. Was thinking that maybe redoing the top in cork and then finishing that in urethane. I have the drawer base out now as well so I am going to look into that wine storage idea, thanks for the tip.
