Radar damaging sail

For the third time my mast mounted radar has torn the headsail sail cover. Apparently leech adjustment cord some how also gets torn. Thought of guard for radar, anyone tried this. Changed orignal radar to Garmin HD, could that be the problem?

Know what radar platform Catalina used on 2004 Catalina 36 MK II?

Barry,
I don't know what mount you used, but when I installed a radar on Julandra, I did a bunch of research and decided on the Kato radar mount. It is a SS mount that requires a template of your mast, and the exact radome model, so the fit is very good. It was strong enough that I could hang on it when it was installed, and the jib just swept past it. Hope this helps.

Like Tom, I installed the Kato Radar mount over 2 years ago and have been very pleased with it. No issues with the Genoa as the guard rail of the Kato mount allows the sail to slide right by it.

I used the Edson with my Raymarine 18 inch radome. It has been fine for ten years. I have a 135 genny.

About year 3 I did have a large 'patch' sewn into the sail, about 15 inches square, where the sail rubs across the radome...just in case. Over the years that patch has gotten a bit dirty looking, I'm guessing because of the light moss or mildew that collects on the radome through the Pacific Northwest winters.

Barry - when I installed my Garmin HD last year I noticed that it had a small triangle formed in the cover at the front edge of the radome. The triangle had somewhat sharp edges so I carefully removed it with a razor knife and polished it up with very fine sandpaper. I have had no problem with my head sail to date.
I used the Edson mount and it has no rail.

!. the radar platform say Raymarine, anyone know the model number

2. notice that there were 4 bolts about 1 1/2 inches under the radar platform securing the radar dome. I am beginning to the that when the headsail backfills it runs across these bolts. Removed them today and will have sail repaired.

3 radar donme looks smoth, nothing sharp on cover ot edges

4. plastic end covers on rigging, so that's not the problem

Barry, it might be the bolts. There should be nothing up there that can inhibit the free motion of the sailcloth across the radome. Minor sail abrasion over (a long) time and perhaps some soiling from dirt and/or fungus (here in the PacNW) should be the only things to be concerned about.

I would recommend anyone thinking about getting a radar for mast mount select an 18 inch radome rather than a 24" radome. For several reasons: 1) There will be less cloth abrasion; 2) it will save weight which is an important consideration up high; 3) it will save you money. You'll get entirely adequate performance from an 18 inch radome, thus; 4) leaving you more money for other things, such as 5) taking a proper radar course so you know how to use the system.

I cut the bolts and hopefully that resolves the issue. After removing the Raymarine radar 1 1/2 years ago, I installed a Garmin GMR 18 HD radar system.
