Hello Everyone,
Can anyone in the San Diego area recommend a good honest mechanic or shop that works on the M25? I have reached my limit of trying to figure problems out on my own and think I should get some expert advice.
For all the "Experts" here, my symptoms are:
1. Engine revs to 22-2300 rpm fine in neutral but in drive will only reach 1800 tops.
2.While in drive and motoring, the engine makes a slight but continuous "surge/rebound" operational sound.
3.After running engine long enough to be at maximum operating temp (even hours). My temp gauge never even gets to 160 degrees.
4.After running engine long enough to reach max temp and shutting off. The engine will not start again until 1-2 hours cooling off.
5. Cold starting is never a problem, Battery power is not an issue. Replace fuel pump with new two weeks ago, replaced all fuel filters with in a month.
Any ideas?
Thanks

OK, I'll take a best guess.
#1 - my engine will not reach full rpms under load, though I don't know the actual difference
#2 - you might check your fuel tank vent, this sounds a bit like fuel starvation. Here in the east, spiders love to plug those vents.
#3 - thermostat??
#5 - which fuel pump did you replace, low pressure or high pressure (expensive)????

Hopefully someone can give you a recommendation for a technician in your area.
As for your symptoms, could be several things, as for item one as suggested a fuel vent problem could cause your lack of RPM, so could a oversize prop or other prop problem. I would also consider the posiblility of a restricted exhaust elbow. They do eventually plug up with salt deposits and restrict exhaust flow and could mimic your lack of RPM and surging issue.
Sounds like you need a new thermostat to get the engine up to temp, not good for a diesel to run cold.
Your starting problem needs further definition, does the engine crank but not start or just not crank. If the latter is the answer a new starter and solinoid would be were I would be where I would start.

I am a member of the San Diego Catalina Association, and recently we had a speaker at our monthly meeting named Jim Wilson from JW Marine Service.
I have no experience with this person, but he seemed to be very knowledgeable, and you might want to give him a call.
I have e mailed the commodore for recommendations too.
Jim can be reached at 619 807 9360.
Good luck.
