Bowmar hatch plastic replacement

Any recommendations on how to replace the plastic in a Bowmar main salon hatch? Are replacements available with out replacing the entire hatch? Current hatch has cracked across the hole for the hold down dog.

I would try Catalina Direct as a starting point.

Or call Catalina Yachts to see if you can find a part number and for another provider.

Not sure if they will sell the the lens only.

Hi Bob,

I just had the lenses from the main cabin and head hatch replaced at our local boat yard in Portland Oregon. They pulled the lenses, had a replacement made at a local plastics shop, and reinstalled them. It is not cheap as it cost about $250 per hatch to have this done. Select Plastics is an outfit back in CT 877-874-3767 that will do the work as well. Of course you could remove the lens, find a local plastic shop to have it made, and replace it yourself. It seems that the money saved on this job may not be worth the hassle to DIY.

Take care,

John

I'm in the process of replacing the lenses on my Lewmar hatches (just did one about an hour ago). I chose to do it myself. After I covered the boat for the winter, I removed a sample of each lense size and put a temporary plywood cover over each. I contacted Select Plastics, sent them rough measurements and they shipped the pieces to me very quickly. I then traced the old lenses and cut the new pieces to size, along with drilling the required holes.

I've been delayed getting the new lenses in as the best advice says the caulk requires that the temperature not dip below 50 degrees for the 3 weeks it takes to set. Cleaning the old silicone out takes awhile; I used a sheetrock and razor knife, finishing up by sanding with #60 sandpaper and cleaning with acetone. The edge of the plastic I sanded and cleaned with denatured alcohol. Tape the frame, caulk, smooth with a plastic scraper and wait overnight, then remove the tape and the paper from the plastic. After a few weeks, the caulk is hard enough to trim if necessary with a razor knife.

3 down, 3 to go.....
