My recently purchased VHF radio with DSC and AIS receiver required to be interfaced to my portable (or hand held) GPS that uses 2 AA batteries. The serial NMEA at 4800 baud data sent from the GPS refused to be displayed on the radio however it worked fine when connected to my PC that was running Sea ClearII. The problem was discovered to be low voltage swing from the GPS. Being in electronics business - I designed a circuit that uses the boats 12VDC system to boost this signal and now it works great. If you are having this trouble contact me I will send you more info.
I hope this will help someone one day. I am not sure if I am allowed to post the model number of the radio and the GPS - so I am not. So PM me and I will respond to your email.
I would like to know if any one else has run into this interfacing problem and what their solution was.

Haro -- I am working on all that stuff at the moment.
How did you actually connect the GPS to the VHF? I am planning to use a multiplexer so I can share GPS with the PC, the VHF and the autopilot. But the multiplexer wants bare wires. The GPS interface cable terminates in a plug usually.
Would like to know more details about your installation.
Thx

Haro,
I am not sure why you could not post the manufacturer or model, unless you are planning to be libelous.
