Hi friends,
It rained again last night and I was reminded that my hatches leak, because the weather-stripping gaskets are old and beat down and useless (no comparisons with the owner, please).
I talked with Catalina Direct and they aren't familiar with the main hatch I have (which has a cross-member to strengthen the frame of the hatch cover, and to provide support from below to someone walking on it, I suppose). The Bomar-spec hatch gaskets they have are shaped with a flat extension on the bottom of the tubular form that looks as though it's to fit in a dado or groove in the bottom of the channel. My channel is just round, so I am wondering if I can use any standard 9/16ths weather stripping and pay a bundle less than the $4.99 a foot they want.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Nick

Don't have an answer, but I'm piggybacking onto your call for help. Our '85 C36 has 2 opening ports (one in the head, and one opposite on the starboard side), that are apparently the Bomar 3000, and they leak (not badly, but enough to be an annoyance). Catalina Direct's website indicates that the gasket is not replaceable and the only option is to replace the entire port -- which ain't cheap.
Have any members encountered this issue, and is so, what did you do (or what do you recommend)?

Aha, I see that you are dealing with ports (as you said, now that I reread it) . . . I am working with hatches. I will share anything I learn nevertheless.

Here is the link to Bomar's parts site and contact info.

If you click on "Online Catalog" and scroll down to "Spare Parts," you might find the seal you are looking for. However, it would be well to call them for advice on which hatch you have and the exact seal you need.
I was told by a local boatyard that they had to go through Fisheries Supply in Seattle, but called Bomar/Ponpanette in NH and the Customer Service rep said they sell to anyone with a credit card.
Recall Bomar also wanting $5 and something a foot for the seal.
I assume your seal is beyond soap and water and then a coating of silicone grease to renew the rubber?
My Bomar hatch just aft of the mast had a drip (after a couple days of rain) around the interior frame that was not seal-related . Asked the yard to rebed the hatch, but they found the leak to be from missing sealant around the hinge mounting hardware. Had to drill out the old fasteners, tap and use machine screws. Also ordered new hinges, since one of the 25 year old composite hinge pins was broken in the process. Unfortunately, Bomar doesn't sell the pins absent you buy the whole hinge assembly, or so I was told. However, the hinges arrived (finally!) with the pre-drilled holes close but not quite lining up with the old ones. Yard reused the old hinges with two 5/16" (or 3/8"?) stainless bolts with those plastic insert locking nuts for the pins and they look fine. The bolts were spirally wrapped in Teflon tape and silicone grease applied to make a snug fit. Was advised to remove and re-grease the bolts if the hinges ever get sticky. Aluminum and stainless, etc.
Hope this is helpful.

Howdy,
I got a replacement gasket directly from pom(sp?) but i believe the instructions were to use super glue to glue the gasket in place, i'm not sure silicone would have the same effect but that was just to join to ends together. they have some type of adhesive that has a covering over it much like a two sided tape and that seems to hold well. as i wrote this i believe that they recommend super glue along the corners as well but it will be include in the instructions that come with the gasket. one note is that you might want to glue the two edges together on the aft end of the hatch. i think the folks at bomar recommending splicing to two end together on the hinged end and unless you make a perfect mating you will see a small amount of water come in when you take water of the deck (fwiw)

I didn't know about that approach. Do tell more -- is this a long term cure (or at least standard maintenance)?

Not sure where you are, but you might consider Select Plastics
http://www.selectplastics.com
They have all gasket stocks or can do the repair themselves.
I used them to re-do all my deck hatches. Great folks.

I was able to get original Bomar gasket for the hatches on my 1984 C36 at West Marine.
I called Catalina Direct and they were not familiar with the exact hatch I have from Bomar. In the end it seems the gasket they had was the same one, but the lady was unsure so I passed. Then I called Bomar and spoke to a lady who had been working there since 1974! She assured me that the 9/16" gasket # P100-52 was the right one, and informed me that West Marine sells it. I checked and amazingly my local store had one package of 10' available.
Note that West Marine has the part # wrong and calls it P100-55. Their own part # is 567745.
Also note that you can purchase by the foot from Bomar or Catalina Direct but West Marine only sells 10' lengths: depending on your needs this may leave a lot of wastage.
As to price:
Bomar $5.25 / ft.
Catalina Direct $4.99 / ft.
West Marine $37.99 / 10 ft.

Hi Matthew
The six opening ports (two in aft berth) on my 1987 C36 tend to build up a layer of dirt and Puget Sound's green slime on the interface between the gaskets and plastic lenses. Over time this hardens and after being opened and then closed, the ports are fond off leaking. Once a year, a rag dipped in warm soapy water can be used to remove this crud from both surfaces and that generally does it for the opening ports. Have also used spray glass cleaner and paper towels.
The hatch gaskets on my boat can get dirty and brittle over time and tend to drip in heavy rain or when I'm washing the boat. Have had success with cleaning the gaskets and their mating surfaces and then running a fingertip of silicone grease along the gasket to restore its pliability. It doesn't take much and I remove any excess with a soft cloth.
Have not tried the silicone grease on the gaskets of the opening ports, as they have not yet leaked after being cleaned. If they did, I'd try refreshing the gaskets with the grease before going to the trouble of replacing them.
Hope this is helpful.

Thanks, Jack! I'll certainly give your treatment a try -- sounds much easier and cheaper than replacement. Our boat is 2 years older, so we just have the 2 opening ports up front and one in the aft compartment, and its not a lot of leakage, but enough to be a nuisance in heavy sailing.
