1984 catalina 36 engine panel

i need some help. i bought my 36 about 3 months ago. had it delivered to my yard so i could work on it before launching. i have not started the engine sence the servey/seatrial. tried to start it yesterday with no luck. mostly because the names on the engine panel are worn off. i dont remember what they do. played with them to no avail. also starting battery voltage read 10.9 is this to low. i got no responce from any combination of push and pulls. engine is a universal. can anyone help me identify the controls. key is on far right. a pull knob is left of key. then glow plug button. then another pull knob to left and up a little. thank you for your help. jim

Jim, you can find out a lot about your engine and control system here: http://shop.torresen.com/marine_diesel_direct/Universal/

This website and our C34 'site have the engine manuals, find them if you don't have one of your own.

We most likely have the same panel. From right to left: Key (ignition) switch - turn right to engage; glow plug pushbutton; start button; all the way left is the black engine shutoff handle.

Pretty simple. Are you in the water? Since you say you're at your "yard"....

Sounds like you need to charge your batteries, too.

A picture would be very helpful for us to help you.

My 1983 boat has a pull knob in the lower right for the ignition, a pushbutton in the lower left for the glow plug, and another pushbutton just to the right of the glow plug button for the starter.

A series of owners have added and removed various toggle switches and warning lights to the left of the panel, none of them seem to do anything so I stuck another pull knob in one of the holes to control the blower that I added to the engine box.

I can't think what else you would have on an engine panel other than ignition (which SHOULD get you a loud beeping or buzzing oil pressure alarm), starter, glow plug, and maybe blower.

"water running to intake..."

Be sure it's to a bucket and NOT directly through a hose to the intake line to your RW pump. Seems you're out of the water???

Pictures? After you type in your reply text, scroll down to Manage Attachments. You'll have to reduce the size of the flicks.

You probably already know this, but I'll tell you anyway.

Make sure the large "T" shaped handle on the left is all the way in, not pulled out. This is the shut off knob. Out is off and in is on. The engine will turn over with the handle pulled out but the engine will not start in this position.

-10.8 volts is likely too low to turn it over
-if you get a 'thunk' but no turn, you have hydrolocked the engine (water in cylinders) by running a hose into the intake without the engine running (open decompression lever and try the starter, does the engine turn then?)

If you get no oil pressure beeper when the key is on I would be looking at power sources first - batteries on, connected, ignition circuit connected, etc. etc.

jim, 'cuz the street water pressure will overcome the impellers on the rw pump and severely mess up your engine. Maine Sail, a former C36 owner, and a contributor to this forum, has addressed this question in detail on this and other boards. Please, trust me on this one, use the bucket.

Here's why: http://forums.catalina.sailboatowners.com/showthread.php?p=577560&highli...

yeahhhh!!!!! problem solved. because of your suggestions i retraced all the probable culprits and found nicely tucked away the harness plug disconnected behind the panel. once connected the motor fired right up and was purring like a kitten. and yes i used a bucket and also preprimed the hose so no air got sucked in. thank you all again very much.

Jim,
If you have a harness plug, either behind the engine or behind the engine panel, then you should DEFINITELY do the wiring harness upgrade. There is a more complete description on the website, under the Technical Tab, then under the Important Notices Tab. Ignoring this could lead to random electrical problems, and possibly a fire. Good luck with the new boat!

Jim,

Tom's suggestion to use the Important Notices is a good idea.

Our version of that for our boats is called "Critical Upgrades" and you can find it here: http://c34.org/bbs/index.php/topic,5078.15.html

Reply #21 includes links to the wiring harness issues, and you may want to read both pages of that topic, since our boat systems are so identical.
