midship cleat

Thinking of installing a midship cleat for spring lines and singlehanded docking..Looks like just forward of the diesal filler cap should work(on both sides of course) Any comments before i drill holes?Type of cleat?

Here's what some of our guys have found:

I think there were discussions here, too, so try a search.

When I dock single handed, I tie a long line from the bow cleat to the stern cleat. Then, when I get in close to the dock, I just jump off and can control both ends of the boat with the single line. Easy. For a spring line, I just use the cleat on the track.

I have a track on the toe rail just outboard of the jib sheet hardware. I use a cleat that slides on the track and can be taken off, or moved as appropriate, for just this purpose. And, no new holes.

When I dock at my own dock at my house I have a line that I leave at the dock tied to a piling at the aft end or the dock. When I return I just pick up the line drom the dock with a boat hook and wrap it around the genoa winch and leave the sailboat in forward at idle and the wheel set at midship rudder. The sailboat moves and stops flush against the dock while I leasurely go forward attach the forward line, return to the cockpit and attach the stern line or visa versa then shut the engine down. Caprice does have midship clets, but I don't use them while coming into a dock.

If I go visiting to a marina I attach a long line to the same winch as I mention above then throw the other end around a piling and secure it or pass it to the dock attendant to secure. This is a little more difficult if I have to catch a clet on the dock. The piling or dock clet must be furter back then the aft part of the sailboat to work.

Another thing about the sliding cleats. The one I had which was held together by two rivits from the cleat to the slide, snaped off at the rivits during the 178 mph wind of Hurricane Charly. The replacement sliding clet is a one peice unit which I stronly recomend to use to secure your boat other then just for a one day attended stop over.

I have an adjustable sliding cleat that fits on the outboard Genoa track of the Mkll which I use for docking. The dock cleat is too far forward of the stern cleat on the boat to be of any use. I rigged up a short line with a spliced loop on each end, one end I leave attached to the aft dock cleat and when returning I just throw the other loop over the midship cleat on the Genoa track to stop the boat drifting forward (downwind dock). I then attach a stern line which makes everything secure while I attach the remaining dock lines. However, I do like John Reimans solution.

The midship cleats come standard on the 375, and I use them all the time. What I have added are stern cleats on the back of the boat. There are cleats at the rear, but I wanted ones right on the back of the boat, to make tying up easier.
I will take some photos tomorrow (it's almost winter here, so it will be 22C and 10knots while I sail up the coast), gee it's hard living in Australia.
