Wild Ride Outside the Golden Gate

A friend of mine and I took my C36 outside the Golden Gate yesterday. We got maybe a mile out to sea with winds gusting up to 41 kts. and seas up to about ten feet. My friend, who's something of a sailing purist (without being judgmental) was impressed at how well the "Y-Knot" handled it. We had a rail in the water - and below it sometimes - with about a third of the main up and maybe half of my 90% jib. As for the roller furled main - even he had to admit it has some good points.

Here's a link to a video I did (I hope). I'll never win an Oscar for best camera work of the year, but hopefully it gives some idea.

I hope those of you facing snow and ice don't feel too jealous. (Just a little bit is okay.)

Excellent! That's beyond anything I've ever sailed in. It's good to see how well the boat does in those conditions.

Jealous? Absolutely!

That's a great video. Very well done.

Also an interesting dodger you have. Seems like a canvas dodger, but with a 'wall-to-wall' plexi windshield. Where did you get that?

I think it's the same as a lot of other dodgers, with one main central window and two side ones.

The video is awesome, but I hope you have some sort of PFD on somewhere under the jacket! I remember how cold that Bay area water is!!

John:

Great afternoon on the water, especially if you got back with no one hurt and the boat intact. The videos never seem to show the real intensity and actual happenings during the moment, but yours came very close. Nice job.

I am a bit jealous.
I walk on snow and ice today and think about next summer.
It is a funny sailing that you have, the boat can take it very well, I hope I can do the same one time.
Happy New Year to you and every one of thi association.

PFD? We don't need no stinkin' PFDs!

Kidding... That wasn't me you saw in the video; it was my sailing buddy who's also named John, and, yes, he had a pfd on under his jacket. In fact, we were both tethered to the boat. There was one point at which I was grinding the winch when, if I hadn't had a good hold with my other hand I could have easily gone head over heels, possibly into the drink.

Good Man! Now I can sleep easy :-)

I have many fond memories of my first sailing days in and around SF Bay area. That is where I learned to sail. My boss had a Catalina 22, but we also went as race crew on his friends boats. Nice.

First, thanks for sharing that video. I maintain that it is almost impossible to capture the true magnitude of heavy seas with a camera, so I have an idead what it might have been like.

Second, I hope the PFD under the jacket was not an inflatable type. If they inflate under an outer garment, they can suffocate you with the pressure they exert on your chest. In general, all PFDs should be worn on the outside, and especially inflatable ones.

Happy New Year, all!

Thanks for sharing the video, now we all understand why you get water leaking down your mast. The mast is supposed to stay above the water line most of the time.

I was at work at the airport in San Jose, fifty miles to the south that day and most folks stayed on the ground as it was gusting to 40KTS here. Sailing out the Gate was not something on my mind but, it looks like you had a great time. It looks to have been one of those Mr. Toads Wild Rides. The wind if, not too gusty can be managed by reefing and trimming. The sea state can be demanding and of a larger concern in the Gate.

For those who have not experienced conditions like this it really makes you appreciate what great boats we own.

I thought the mast is only supposed to stick up in the air when the boat is at the dock.
