What's the consensus out there on folding props versus fixed? I don't like the way a folding prop bangs open, but then, who wants to loose speed with a fixed prop. I've also heard folding props don't back well. Anyone have the definitive word or a strong opinion based on experience?
Thanks.
we have a kiwi folding prop on our C36; works a treat but it does make quite a thump when we shift to reverse. Reversing is always a bear as we get full bite and port prop walk immediately;steerage is good once we have 2 knots across the rudder. The reduced drag of the folding prop when sailing is great.

It's like just about every other question that gets asked about a boat, it depends on what you want to get out of your boat. As for myself, I have the smallest least exspensive and lowest drag prop I could buy. My boat can't get out of it's own way under power, and stopping the boat by hitting reverse is not an option. But my passion is racing so it's the perfect prop for me. There are plenty of options when it comes to propellers, so you need to make the compromises that best suit your needs.
