Autopilot 4000 Noise

Just recently when I disengage the Auotpilot wheel clutch lever, there is a very noticeable ratcheting noise when I rotate the wheel to port. The noise seems to be concentrated from the area of the clutch. Has anybody dealt with a similar situation and how was the repair carried out?
Best regards,
Tony

It sounds like your clutch is not fully disengaging. That would account for that noise.

I would play with the clutch lever and carefully observe what is happening. Good luck!

Is the destroyer wheel removed by simply removing the locknut or must it be pressed off?
Thank you,
Tony

Make sure to clean the steering shaft and wheel hub bore very well once it is off. Fine emery cloth might be needed. Lubricate it with a film of good grease before reinstallation.

Somehow mine corroded enough to make removal a real pain.

When you take the wheel off, make sure that first it's in the rudder amidship position. There's a key slot in the axle, and if the slot is on top (which it is when the rudder is centered), the key will stay put. Otherwise the key could fall out and be lost.

We often remove our wheel and bungie it to the side of the stern pulpit, just to get it out of the way.

Not to hijack this thread...but Larry, how is this working out for you? Have you looked at or considered the Edson wheel lock? I'd appreciate your thoughts as the wheel really gets in the way while we are anchored and swim...and we do that a lot in the summer on Lake Lanier.

By the way, it sounds like the autopilot clutch is not fully disengaged...so the belt has some unwanted traction. You need to manually push the lever to the 100% "released position"...sometimes my clutch lever only released part of the way and I experienced similar symptoms.

Great idea for a temporary fix! However the nail is pretty soft steel and will rust quickly. My solution was to over drill the hole slightly and use a small stainless bolt and nut in place of the rolled pin.

The problem could also be accumulated dirt/salt. RM recommends a regular rinsing with fresh water. Mine made a horrible racket when I first got the boat. Took about a whole can of WD40 followed by a good rinse to get mine squeak free.

The standard nut is just fine for removing the wheel. Don't waste your boat bucks on the wheel lock.

In another thread, Larry and Tom discuss wheel position which is not always TDC for the key position.
