Sail numbers

What numbers are used for the sail numbers, is it the hull number and if so how do I find that out of all the digits in the ID number? current sail has no numbers, dont have original 1988 sail?

Also what is the usual weight for mainsail. I sail in Hawaii and seems at least 8 oz is required ALoha

Sail numbers are part of the hull number.

Typically the numbers on the sail are the ID number. Here is a sample Hull ID I pulled off the internet for a Catalina 36. CTYR0418L485. The ID for this boat would be 418.

It doesn't have to be this way though as I race against Hunter 37.5 pretty regularly and his sail number is 375 which is not his hull ID but his boat model.

Hope this helps.

If you want to go racing, official sail numbers are administered by your local sailing authority, in your case probably US sailing or maybe some state organization. Here in BC you get one from BC Sailing. It has nothing to do with what kind of boat or hull ID you have.

Many one-design fleets such as Melges 24s will use the hull number as the sail number but this likely won't apply to a bigger cruiser-racer boat.

Most clubs let there members choose their sail numbers, as long as they don't conflict with other boats in your class. You can always contact US SAILING
I have also seen alot of boats I race against with thier hull number used for their sail number. As the last post showed the Boat ID it is the numbers in line
EXAMPLE CTYR0235M84F

The hull # is 0235

Hope that helped
