too much water out of prop shaft

Just started engine for 1st time this season before launching and had alot of water coming out of the prop shaft. There is a hose connected to stuffing box for lubrication, but it seems like way too much when a few drops would probably do. Repack stuffing box?? Look for blockage further down the cooling system ??? Never heard of a problem like this.
Thanks for any thoughts on cause and cures.

Tighten the brass nuts on the shaft.  I bought a special thin wrench for the purpose and leave it next to the stuffing box.  It cost $20, plus you need another wide mouth set of pliers.  With the engine idling and prop spinning tied to the dock, tighten the inner nut so that only one drop comes out per second or two, then tighten the outer nut against the inner nut.

Thanks for your reply Kevin. I believe I didn't describe my issue correctly. This 1984 Cat 36 has a PYI PSS Shaft Seal with raw exhaust water plumbed to a nipple on the seal. The water is exiting at  the prop shaft outside the hull. The repair you descibed would work well on my old J30, which had a standard stuffing box ,packing nut  mechanism. My concern was the large amount of water, comparable to the exhaust water exiting the stern. I called PYI in Washington and they were very helpful in explaining that this is a "normal " function.  I also realise I never observed the boat from ground level while engine runnning as I was the idiot filling the bucket wi'th raw water inside the boat. I'm still a little scepticle , but they told me not to worry about it. Going to inspect that whole mechanism well before launching.
Thanks Again

I have a drillers on our shaft without an attached hose. I have had to tighten the deal against the bellows by loosening the set screws in the collar, slide it along the shaft a sma!l but to push more against the bellows, this tightening the deal inside the bellows. This eliminates any spray from the rotating shaft.
