Leakage

I cannot seem to stop the leakage from where the port side shrouds meet the deck. Somwhere in there is a leak that comes through the thru deck fitting and the water runs down the solid brace that imbeds into the hull. The water then pools to the forward end of that settee and is begining to cause damage to the wooden bulkhead with the head.

I have cleaned this out and filled it three times and it still leaks - am I missing anything?

Thanks

Exactly what did you do to clean and rebed it?

I have used a awl, dental picks and screw drivers to remove the old bedding compound and then filled it with boatlife caulking. It just does not seem to last or am I missing a spot.

Thanks

Here's the site of "Maine Sail" where he describes how to rebed deck penetrations. I didn't do all of what he suggested, but the main thing was I used butyl tape, as he suggested.

In any case, it's certainly worth reading his directions.

Leaks on boats can be the devil to troubleshoot. A leak that you think is at the shroud might actually be at a stanchion base, or deck hardware, or...somewhere quite a distance away from where you imagine it to be. I suggest taking some steps to validate your conclusion.

Perhaps you could build a small dam around strategic candidates (with masking tape, or putty???) and flood each one-by-one until you confirm the source.

Please let us know if you do this and what your final validation turns out to be.

Catalina sells chainplate covers (#24263), $7.56 each in 2009, that will proved a much better seal for the shroud deck fittings, especially sealed with butyl tape. For use on pre-2002 C36’s.

Order them from Dani Monterroso, Dani@catalinayachts.com

Wow, that's a great find. Thanks for posting that. The diagram seems to illustrate the chainplate for the uppers, but I'd assume it would fit the lowers as well? Not at the boat or I'd look, but I think they are the same size?

The covers should work for all 6 chainplates. I plan on installing them this year. I have a bag of 6 covers waiting for me to install. I talked with some of the Catalina engineers at the Annapolis boat show a couple years ago asking about the propensity for chainplate leaks. That is when they told me about these retrofit pieces.

When rebedding, it is important to let the Boatlife caulk "set up" a bit before you make that final tightening. The idea is to tighten down just shy of squeezing out the shape of the caulk, let the caulk sit overnight, then make the final tighten down to the now firmed up bedding.

I think there was a good website with pictures on this I saw a few years ago. Perhaps on the C34 site?

Are these different then the SS plates that are already on the deck? I have these on my MKI, have these plates changed.

Mainsail has a different view of this approach. Note that I used to follow the same procedure until I read Mainsail's reasoning. I just rebedded some stanchions using his butyl tape method, and found it pretty easy to implement.

Hey Tom: I understand your frustration with this. The flange on the retrofit will definitely help to minimize leaks but the actual deck plate still looks pretty small. You may want to take a look our latest posting (and previous ones) related to our ideas for a completely redesigned chain plate system. Have you decided what sealant you will use. You may wish to consider butyl tape.

Rick, where are you getting the butyl tape? Maine Sail doesn't ship to Canada and I have found a couple of hundred different kinds of butyl tape and they're all different. I'm ready to give that a try given the spotty results I'm getting with conventional sealants from 3M and Sika. Can you give me an idea of what you got and where you got it? Thanks.

Are your sure that's where the water is coming in? I had a leak in my C 30 coming in thru the side window and rebedded it a couple of times until someone suggested the hatches in the deck.

After I sealed the hatch behind the mast, the leakage stopped. You might want to run some sealer around your hatches and see what happens. If that works, you can pull the hatches and do a complete reseal.

I know some people will think that resulted in water in the liner... it may have but I sold the boat and it passed survey, and it's been sold twice since so I guess it worked out OK.
