Fuel Starvation

I'm experiencing what seems to be a fuel starvation problem.

Starts and runs fine, then about 10-15 min later the engine dies, studdering as from fuel.

If I wait a minute, it will start back up and run again for anothe 10-15 min.

I have changed both fuel filters.

I have 1/2 tank of fuel, and there is a gravity flow from the tank down to the first filter.

There is fuel coming out the final hose from filter #2 to the injector cluster.

Is there a specific amount of fuel per minute that should be coming out?

Is there some other air pocket of vacuum leak that is causing this?

Help!

Check the tank vent. Could be clogged. One thing you could try, if it's not wet out, is to motor with the filler cap off.

Clogged Vent sounds just like the ticket.

It "feels" like it takes a while for the vacuum pressure to build, leading to engine stop.

Where exactly is the fuel tank vent? Same as the overflow port?

I think they are one and the same. Mine leads aft, exiting the transom on the port side. Same type of vent fitting as the water tank vent that's in the cockpit.

the fuel tank vent is on the aft side of the transom/pushpit. If I remember correctly its on the same side of the walk thru transom as the fuel tank (port) for you and I (only a couple of serial numbers apart). It looks just like the two water tank vents on the starboard side of the walk through.... You would get fuel out of the vent if you overfill/fill to fast the tanks.

OK, I'm down at the boat.

The fuel vent hose is clear.

With the fuel tank fill cap tightly closed, I blow into the fuel tank, and then release to get that same breath of air back.

With the fuel tank fill cap open, my full breath goes right through.

Also, running the engine with the cap open does not solve the problem.

With new fuel filters, and a working fuel pump, I am a loss to figure out what is causing this.

Any ideas?

How are your fuel lines - any air leaks?

I went and more fully tightened the primary fuel filter (Racor) and the problem seems to have gone away.

Will report back after a full day's sailing.

If your boat is set up the same way my '97 is, the Racor filter/water separator is on the vacuum side of the pump, so a loose filter or other fitting could suck air and create bubbles. That will cause the symptoms you reported. I had a fitting leak on the filter on my first boat, and that was exactly what would happen, run fine for awhile, stumble, stop. You may need to bleed the air from the lines to totally get rid of the air; hopefully, tightening the filter will solve the problem and you can move on to enjoying your boat..!!!

PS. Did you check the mesh screen in the lift pump? Sounds unlikely but anything's possible if it causes something inconvenient.

Fixed!

I was able to tighten the Racor filter unit a few more turns.

I also tightened the hose clamps on the hose from the Racor to the pulling fuel pump. Those clamps gave a few easy turns before feeling really tight.

Now, it runs clean and clear without that interrupted missing.

Thanks for the advise.

Thinking about the vacuum (suction) from the fuel pump helped me solve it.

I had a similar problem but eventually it stopped running completely. It was caused by a blockage where the fuel hose goes into the primary water separator filter. The hose goes into a fitting that makes a 90 degree turn down into the filter. That's where the blockage was.
