Here's a photo of Wind Star sailing from Tongatapu, Tonga on a 50 Nm hop to Kelefesia in the Ha'apai Group in 2008. After departing at 04:00 and feeling our way out through the shipping channel (some lights were missing) here we're in nice flat water doing about 6 Kts, 3 reefs in the main, genoa partially furled. We could have managed well with 2 reefs but we like to be a bit conservative.
We do things differently up here in the Pacific Northwest, where men are men, and sailors are...what??? This sailboat is obviously rigged for crossing the intimidating Columbia River Bar - the area called the 'Graveyard of the Pacific' - and for rugged offshore racing. They drive to Astoria, Oregon's West Basin marina (where this shot was taken) in a beat up pickup with a gun rack in the back window. No wusses these guys!
After a nice short sail after work, always nice to relax and watch the sunset
Weather was not the best (19C - 5kn wind & overcast), but it is winter in Australia!
Amazing cruising grounds in New Caledonia, we enjoyed three months there in 2010, returning to New Zealand - seven days on port tack, hard on the wind (pinching) 3 litres of diesel consumed in 1000 miles :-)
Nothing is prettier than a C36 moving to windward. This shot is on the Barnegat Bay in New Jersey . The Admiral is at the helm, of course.
